QUICK ANSWER
How Shoe Lift Sizes Work
Shoe lift sizes are stated as the height added to the sole, in inches — 1/4″, 1/2″, 1″, 2″ and so on. We build every height from 1/8″ to 4″ in 1/8″ steps, and extended lifts to 5″ and 6″. The lift is bonded into the sole of one shoe, full-length from heel to toe, so the whole foot is raised evenly. Price depends only on height, never on shoe type.
The right size is set by your measured leg length difference and by your doctor’s or physical therapist’s recommendation. Two rules of thumb clinicians use: small differences (under about 1/4″) often need no lift at all, and large, long-standing differences are often corrected partially at first and increased over time. Our free measurement kit and our guide to choosing the correct shoe lift height will get you to a number; your clinician confirms it.

METRIC
Centimetres to Inches for Shoe Lifts
Doctors outside the US, and many radiology reports, give leg length differences in centimetres or millimetres. Here is how the common measurements map to the lift sizes we build:
| Measured difference | Closest standard lift |
|---|---|
| 5 mm (0.5 cm) | 1/4″ (or 1/8″ for the smallest differences) |
| 1 cm | 3/8″ – 1/2″ |
| 1.5 cm | 5/8″ |
| 2 cm | 3/4″ |
| 2.5 cm | 1″ |
| 3 cm | 1 1/8″ – 1 1/4″ |
| 4 cm | 1 5/8″ |
| 5 cm | 2″ |
| 6 cm | 2 3/8″ |
| 7.5 cm | 3″ |
| 10 cm | 4″ |
We build in 1/8″ steps, so if your prescription is between two sizes we make the exact height — just write it on the order form.

FREQUENTLY ASKED
Shoe Lift Size Questions
Click any question to expand the answer.
What size shoe lift do I need?
The size is set by your measured leg length difference and your clinician’s recommendation, not by guesswork. Measure with our free kit or the steps in our at-home measuring guide, then confirm with a doctor or physical therapist — especially for anything over about 1/2″.
Should the lift be the full difference or part of it?
It varies. A new difference after surgery is often corrected fully; a long-standing one is often corrected partially and increased over time so the body can adapt. Your clinician decides; we build any height you are given and can adjust it later.
What is the smallest shoe lift you make?
1/8″. In practice most people under 1/4″ do not need a lift, so our 1/4 inch shoe lift is the smallest we build regularly.
What is the largest shoe lift you make?
4″ as a standard height, and extended lifts to 5″ and 6″ at $20 per additional inch. See the 4 inch shoe lift page.
Does a bigger lift cost more?
Yes — price rises with height because a taller lift needs more material, more shaping and more reinforcement. Shoe type never changes the price.
Do I need a different lift size for different shoes?
No. The lift height is the same in every pair, because it is correcting your legs, not the shoe. What changes is how visible it is: boots and chunky sneakers hide a big lift; thin flats show it.
Can I change the size later?
Yes. We remove the old lift and rebuild at the new height — see shoe lift adjustment and shoe lift removal.
