WHAT IT IS

What a 1/4 Inch Shoe Lift Does

A 1/4 inch shoe lift is the smallest external build-up we make. We split the sole of your own shoe, bond a 1/4″ (about 6 mm) layer in, and refinish it so the shoe looks factory-made. It is the usual choice for a small leg length difference — the kind that is easy to ignore on paper but shows up as a tight hip or a sore lower back by the end of the day.

Height band: 1/8″ – 1/4″ (3–6 mm). Price: $64.99 per pair, any shoe type, free shipping both ways. Turnaround: work completed in 1–3 business days once your shoes arrive.

Who a 1/4 Inch Lift Is For

  • A measured leg length difference of about 1/4″ to 3/8″, where a doctor or physical therapist has recommended a small lift.
  • A residual difference after hip or knee replacement that is too small for surgery but enough to feel.
  • People who have worn a heel insert that keeps sliding, crushing flat, or lifting their heel out of the shoe — a bonded lift stays put.
  • Sandals, flats, dress shoes and slip-ons where there is no room for an insert at all.

This page is general guidance, not medical advice. For any difference over about 1/2″, or if you have pain, confirm the lift height with your doctor or physical therapist first. Our page on signs you need a shoe lift includes a tool to find a specialist near you.

HOW WE BUILD IT

How We Build a 1/4″ Lift

At 1/4″ we run the lift the full length of the sole, heel to toe, so the foot stays level instead of tipping forward the way it does on a heel-only wedge. The added layer is colour-matched to the original sole and the edges are shaped to the shoe’s own profile, which is why it disappears on almost any style.

Because the build-up is so thin, there is no change to how the shoe flexes and no break-in period. Most people put the shoes on and simply feel more even.

OUR WORK

1/4 Inch Range Lifts From Our Workshop

Works on every shoe type we modify — sneakers, dress shoes, sandals, boots, work boots, golf shoes, kids’ shoes. Thin-soled flats and sandals are where a 1/4″ bonded lift really shines, because no insert would fit inside them.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

1/4 Inch Shoe Lift Questions

Click any question to expand the answer.

Is a 1/4 inch difference worth correcting?

Often, yes — if it causes symptoms. Many clinicians treat differences under 1/4″ as normal, but a difference of 1/4″ or more can tilt the pelvis and load one hip, knee or side of the lower back. If your doctor or physical therapist has suggested a lift, this is the height they usually start with. If you are unsure, our guide to signs you need a shoe lift covers what to look for.

Why not just use a heel insert?

A heel insert lifts the heel only, so the foot sits at an angle inside the shoe. It also takes up volume, slips, and compresses over time. A bonded 1/4″ lift is full-length, permanent and invisible, and it works in shoes with no room for an insert — sandals, flats, dress shoes.

Will anyone be able to see it?

No. At 1/4″ the added layer is thinner than most factory midsoles. We colour-match the sole and shape the edges to the shoe, so the modified shoe looks like the unmodified one.

Do I send one shoe or both?

Send the pair. We modify only the shoe for the shorter leg, but we need the other shoe beside it to match the sole colour and profile exactly.

How much does a 1/4 inch shoe lift cost?

A 1/4″ lift is $64.99 per pair, shipping included both ways. There is no upcharge for shoe type, and children’s shoes get $10 off. See the full shoe lift pricing table.
